Ron Finley grew up in the food desert of South Los Angeles. In 2010, fed up with the lack of nutritious options available to his community, he started planting vegetables on one of many neglected curbside dirt strips in the area.
Little did he know that he would upset authorities by trying to bring a bit of nutritional food, as well as some hummingbirds and the scent of lavender, to an environment where most people eat at chains or buy their groceries at liquor stores. Watch the video above to view Finley’s presentation MAD4, in which he describes how a small act of defiance ended up getting nationwide attention. “We need to make gardening and food sexy,” says Finley. “It’s the only way we are going to make a change.”
